Taking a client from a blunt, one-length hair to long, flowing waves can be a very technical brief. You have to ensure you avoid a visible weight line between the client's own hair and the extensions whilst also ensuring the colour blends all the way through. This transformation by Andrew Thomas Jones shows how a short, blunt blonde can be rebuilt into full, dimensional length with soft movement from root to tip seamlessly.
The greater the distance between the client's natural length and the finished length, the more precise the graduation has to be. Weight distribution and placement are important; too many bonds or bonds too high create a shelf where the natural ends, while not enough hair through the mid-lengths leaves the ends sparse and stringy. Executed correctly, the eye finds no point at which the natural hair stops and the extension hair begins; the result reads simply as the client's own hair at length.

When you're adding significant length, you're introducing a lot of new hair into a simple base and if that hair is a flat, single tone, the wrong colours can give the extensions away. This look was built from four shades: C5, C15, C20 and W15, worked together to hold root depth and carry it down into brighter, dimensional lengths. A deeper-rooted tone keeps the top natural and anchors the base; mid-tones build the body of the colour through the lengths; and a brighter shade lifts the pieces that catch the light, positioned where hand-painted brightness would naturally fall. Because each shade is already multi-tonal in the strand, layering them builds dimension.

A short-to-long transformation is among the most technically demanding results in extension work, combining precise weight distribution with a considered multi-tonal blend.
